You’re probably familiar with Invisalign, the advanced orthodontic system that straightens teeth using a series of clear plastic aligners instead of metal brackets and wires. Patients love Invisalign because it allows them to achieve a beautiful smile without requiring a mouth full of metal in the process.
What you might not have heard of is Invisalign Express. This lesser-known treatment option is a fantastic solution for some patients. Are you a candidate for Invisalign Express? Read on to learn more.
The Invisalign Express System
Traditionally, Invisalign requires anywhere from 20 to 30 sets of aligners in order to straighten teeth and correct bite problems. Each set of aligners is worn for a few weeks, with the exact amount of time being determined by your dentist or orthodontist. As you progress through the series of aligners, your teeth gradually straighten over time. The process can take anywhere from nine to 18 months, with most patients’ treatment times falling somewhere in the middle.
Invisalign Express uses 5 or 10 aligners. (You’ll often see people refer to Invisalign Express 5 or Invisalign Express 10, which indicates the number of aligners in a treatment plan.) By reducing the number of aligners, the treatment time, expense, and number of office visits are also reduced. Invisalign Express treatment usually takes no more than six months to complete. Sounds great, right?
Who Can Get Invisalign Express?
Well, here’s the catch: not every patient is a fit for Invisalign Express. In fact, most patients are not. Invisalign Express only works for patients with minor issues involving crowding and spacing. One of the most common situations we see where Invisalign Express is a fit is patients who had orthodontic treatment in the past and experienced orthodontic relapse—in other words, their teeth shifted back a bit, usually because they didn’t wear their retainers.
The criteria for Invisalign Express includes having less than two millimeters of space between teeth and also the inverse, no more than two millimeters of overlap; tooth rotation must be minimal; no more than two millimeters of midline correction; less than 1.5 millimeters of dental expansion per arch. With more significant spacing, crowding, and bite issues, Invisalign Express simply isn’t an option.
Invisalign Express Process
If Invisalign Express is an option for you, your treatment will be virtually the same as for any other patient with Invisalign—the only difference is the number of trays and the duration of treatment. We use 3D technology to plan your treatment and fabricate your aligners; you’ll be given instructions on how often to change them and how frequently you’ll need to visit our office so we can monitor your progress. Wear your aligners the required 20 to 22 hours per day and your treatment will be fast and easy.
