Although many patients are interested in Invisalign®, metal or clear braces remain an incredibly popular way to straighten teeth.
What are some benefits of traditional braces?
- Traditional braces are the least expensive choice.
- When braces are medically necessary, insurance often covers the cost.
- We offer various options, including clear brackets and metal braces.
- Unlike aligners, braces don’t need to be removed daily. Braces remain on your teeth safely and securely until treatment is complete, and Dr. Bigman will adjust as needed.
When is the right time to consider braces?
We recommend an early orthodontic appointment around your child’s 7th birthday. This lets us analyze the emerging teeth and take preventive measures to give them the best chance of being naturally straight. Still, pediatric braces are often needed! We generally place braces when the child is 10 to 14 years old, depending on individual growth rate and tooth eruptions. However, it is never too late for braces as long as your teeth are healthy, as deemed by an experienced orthodontist like Dr. Bigman.
My child is afraid of the orthodontist’s office. What do you recommend?
We absolutely LOVE treating children! With over 75 years of experience on the Bigman Orthodontics team, we have a particularly kind, compassionate, and patient bedside manner.
We have countless patients who first visit when they are children, and come to us well through their adolescence and into adulthood. This may be in part due to staff that has been with the practice for over 20 years!
There is nothing more rewarding than helping a child face their fears calmly and gently, and see their confidence simply blind us when we complete treatment. While Dr. Bigman enjoys traveling the world for speaking engagements, teaching many orthodontics students, and completing continuing education courses, nothing compares to the joy a child, teenager, or adult feels when they can finally smile without a second thought.
At Bigman Orthodontics, we would be happy to talk with you and/or your child about how to calm fears. You can count on us. Being a preteen or teenager is hard enough, and some kids are overwhelmed by the thought of braces. Give your child enough time to slowly get used to the idea rather than pushing to start treatment immediately – we can help with this part. We will gently remind you or your child that many adults and kids have braces and that treatment is relatively short-lived with benefits that will last a lifetime.
Did we mention we have a Sony Playstation in our office? This can often come in handy when having “the braces talk”!
How do I know I need braces?
Many patients decide to get braces to perfect the look of their smile. However, Dr. Bigman’s concern, first and foremost, is that his patients are treating all of their oral health issues. The need for braces may not just be cosmetic as you would expect! Here are just a few examples of why braces are needed:
- Pain in the jaw caused by misaligned teeth that can even lead to headaches and migraines
- Speech and chewing is affected by untreated teeth
- Crowding in teeth can make it very difficult to brush, floss, and clean teeth – even with professional cleanings. This increases your risk of tooth decay and gingivitis.
How long will I need braces for?
While each case varies, typical treatment time for adult and pediatric cases is one to three years. Dr. Bigman and his team ensure the best experience possible with a few easy steps!
- You can speed up the process a bit by keeping all appointments.
- Wear all devices as instructed.
- Maintain excellent oral hygiene.
How have braces improved the past several years?
We often hear comments like this from parents: “I had braces when I was a child – not a great experience. How has the process improved since then? I’d like to know my child is receiving the best care possible.”
Dr. Bigman is very involved in the orthodontic community, with 11 professional memberships alone! Thanks to his continued and everlasting passion for the field, he has all of the latest and greatest in orthodontic technologies to create a seamless treatment from start to finish.
Specific to braces, they have come a long way in just a few years. The metal brackets are smaller than they used to be, and clear and tooth-colored brackets are available if desired. Heat-activated wires move teeth more gently than before, making adjustments far less painful. Smart brackets and wires are more comfortable and more efficient, and they can sometimes shorten treatment length.
Is Dr. Bigman certified in alternatives to braces?
Dr. Bigman is certified and extensively experienced in Invisalign® and Invisalign® Teen!
