A common question we hear from patients is, “Can I get braces or Invisalign just on my bottom teeth?”
Once Dr. Bigman fully evaluates both the top and bottom arches with state-of-the-art digital x-rays and a comprehensive review of the patient’s oral health, he will help decide the best treatment option. In some cases, that may just mean braces or Invisalign® for bottom teeth. With over 30 years of experience, Bigman Orthodontics has treated many cases and can assess honestly the optimal treatment plan.
Yes! Absolutely – but it depends. When you think of braces, you may think that you need a full set — top and bottom — as many patients do. In some cases, it is not necessary to place braces on all of your teeth. If your top teeth are relatively straight and have been evaluated by a highly-specialized orthodontist like Dr. Bigman to pass the “oral health” test, you may need braces just on your bottom teeth. Some patients forego care of their bottom teeth since they presume top teeth are more visible. This varies on a case-by-case basis, especially when you consider high versus low lip lines. (Do all your teeth show when you smile? Do some of your teeth show when you smile?) With that said, crowding of bottom teeth should be assessed, even if they are not highly visible when you smile – your oral health may depend on it.
What are some reasons I may want to consider just bottom braces?
- Bite: How well do your top teeth and bottom teeth align? When alignment is not corrected this can result in some frustrating side effects like discomfort when chewing, jaw pain and even teeth grinding (hello, nightly mouthguard!) Whether you need braces on both arches or just the bottom teeth depends on your specific bite problem. Straightening just the bottom teeth generally moves them forward. If you have an overbite, this helps to resolve it. If you have an underbite, however, moving your bottom teeth forward will only create more issues, in which case Dr. Bigman can assess the best treatment plan for you.
- Crowding: Crowded, crooked teeth are more difficult to clean than straight teeth, raising your risk for gum disease and tooth decay.
- Pain: Jaw pain caused by misaligned teeth that can even lead to headaches and migraines.
- Cost: If Dr. Bigman can clear your top teeth for optimal oral health now and for years to come, it is possible he will recommend only bottom teeth braces. This can help to reduce the cost for some patient cases, depending on the treatment plan overall.
