National Facial Protection Month

sports Orthodontists, pediatric dentists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons sponsored the sixth annual, "April is National Facial Protection Month." Their message is clear: Avoid sports injuries by wearing a mouth guard. They are encouraging active people-children, parents, weekend warriors, professional athletes-to play it safe when getting outside this spring (or playing indoor sports). For more information on National Facial Protection Month, please visit the American Academy of Sports Dentistry at sportsdentistry.com.

Dr. Bigman wants to protect his patients' teeth, so he is providing them with a free mouth guard. Ask for yours at the front desk. Mouth guards are a good idea all year long!

2007 Halloween Candy Buy-Back

candy Our annual Candy Buy-Back Program successfully collected over 482 pounds of candy. The candy was donated through the Girl Scouts of America to our troops overseas as well as to the Tri-Valley Homless Coalition, with toothbrushes of course! We were able to make a donation of $751 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation because of the generosity of our patients. To check out our news feature on channel KTVU click here.

Event Sponsorships:

In addition to the above, for each annual event, Dr. Bigman always supports a charity organization. He feels it is important to give back to the community and help others in need. His roller skating party benefits The Smile Train and his ice-skating party benefits the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties. Please find more information on these organizations below.

The Smile Train

Smile Train The Smile Train is dedicated to helping the millions of children in the world suffering from cleft lip and palate. Launched in 1999, The Smile Train has a unique strategy of empowering local doctors and hospitals in developing countries to help the children in their communities. This approach enables The Smile Train to provide cleft surgery that costs as little as $250 and takes as little as 45 minutes. Each year, in 50 countries, The Smile Train provides free cleft surgery to more than 35,000 children who would otherwise never receive it. The Smile Train receives no government support and instead relies on the support of generous individuals and organizations. 100% of all donations go towards programs as our Board pays for all non-program expenses. For more information, visit www.smiletrain.org or call 1-877-kidsmile.

Food Bank
The Food Bank was founded in 1975 by people who saw the need for a central clearinghouse for food donations. The Food Bank was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (Federal Tax ID# 94-2418054) at that time. Back then, the Food Bank had two employees, one truck, and a trailer for storing food. The driver would pick up day old bread from Safeway and return it to the trailer, where people from area churches would pick it up and distribute it from their food pantries at church.

They were certified by the America's Second Harvest Food Bank Network in 1981. In 1995, the Solano Food Bank merged with the Contra Costa Food Bank, so they became the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.

Since then, they have grown as the problem of hunger in Contra Costa and Solano counties has grown. They presently serve over 82,000 people every month, and distribute about 8 million pounds a year, enough food for 6.4 million meals! The Food Bank employs 36 staff members in Contra Costa and Solano counties. But the work could not get done without the help of the hundreds of volunteers that donate their time to coordinate food drives, sort and pack the food, and help distribute it to their hungry neighbors.
